CHAPTER 14

The sun was setting when the carriage turned into another town. The inns were much smaller than what Violet was expecting, but she wasn’t unhappy about it. While the bed might not be as comfortable, she didn’t plan to sleep, anyway.

She touched a hand to her hair, certain she was in disarray, though her clothes were neatly laced and in order.

Her husband was clearly very familiar with a lady’s dress and how to get it on and off of her quickly.

She closed her eyes as pleasure still flowed through her veins, thick and sweet.

And, despite her tenderness, she wanted him again. Wanted his arms wrapped around her. Wanted his lips on hers as he was deep inside her.

Violet blew out a breath.

She was the kind of girl her mother had warned her about.

And while that bothered her not one whit, she was worried about how much she had enjoyed the ride with Lord Erik. How much she enjoyed his quiet wit and his sincere concern for his friends.

She was definitely in love with him.

Curse her foolish heart, and curse Dominic for stealing her chance at happiness with him. While most still thought of him as a carefree rake, Violet saw in him the young man she remembered from when they were children. The one who had always been so kind and thoughtful, even to annoying little sisters.

But he had changed. He was a rake, as his father had been before him. And he had the same charm, charisma, and good looks to make him one of the most successful rakes of the ton.

But maybe there could more between them. Simply because he looked like his father didn’t mean he was his father. They might still be able to figure out a path forward, even if Dominic had made it more difficult.

She would never understand why people didn’t see the man Lord Erik Gautin was. The man who allowed everyone to think less of him so they would think more of his brother. Not even Violet’s father had seen through it, and he had been considering a match between her and Lord Michael Gautin.

But he had never considered such a match with Lord Michael’s younger brother. A younger brother Violet had been enamored with forever while she had mostly just tolerated Lord Michael to be polite.

She wondered how well her father had ever gotten to know Lord Erik. While Dominic had been friends with Erik as children, Erik had always been closer friends with Robert and even Jackson.

Probably because Dominic was the one of her brothers Lord Michael had liked best. And Lord Michael hadn’t liked to share even friends with his younger brother.

Not that Lord Michael and Dominic had much in common, at least not back then, but Dominic was the heir. The one who had become the next Earl of Northwick. Violet had always wondered if that was why Lord Michael had chosen to be friends with him.

A foolish reason to be friends with someone, but Violet had never been fond of Lord Michael.
